In our issue last week errors occurred in the record of the funeral of the late Mr Walter George Sexton of Goytrey who died on Wednesday Aprill 22nd at the Royal Gwent Hospital. The funeral took place on the following Saturday. The deceased had a kindly and unassuming character and was in his usual robust health until a few weeks of his lamented death. General sympathy has been expressed with his widow Mrs Eliza Sexton and family in their loss.

The funeral took place at Goytrey Churchyard on Monday of Mr Walter George Sexton, Park View, Goytrey who died at the age of 56 on Friday. He leaves a wife Mrs Elizabeth Ann Sexton and a family of five, Annie, Elizabeth, Gladys, Ethel, and George.

Before the internment a requiem mass was said at Llanarth Court R C Church. The Reverend Father Brown officiating.

Shepherdson, Mr J. W.

February 22nd – Late Mr J. W. Shepherdson

The death has occurred at Sunnyside, Monkswood, of Mr John Wesley Shepherdson, aged 80 years.

Mr Shepherdson was born at Goytrey, and had lived in the district all his life. He had been a churchwarden at St Matthew’s Church, Monkswood, for 21 years. The Rev. R.L. Davies conducted a service at the house and at St.Matthew’s Church. Miss Wrintmore was organist.

Shepherdson, Mrs A E – 1956

May 4th 1956 – Late Mrs E A Shepherdson

There was a large attendance at the funeral of Mrs Elizabeth Ann Shepherson, Sunnyside, Monkswood, at St Mathews Church Monkswood.

Mrs Shepherdson, who was 70, was the wife of Mr John Shepherdson, vicar’s warden for many years at St Mathews Church.

Mrs Shepherdson was a very keen church-worker, particularly with the Sunday School and Mother’s Union.

Canon D Ivor Jones conducted services at the house and church, where he was assisted by Mr B Wray, who read the lesson. Miss Wrintmore was organist.

Mrs M J Spanner, formerly of Goytrey.

The funeral took place at Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, of Mrs Mary Jane Spanner, aged 67, of South Street, Yarmouth, formerly of Goytrey.
She was the eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs R Dobbs, of New House, Goytrey.

Friday January 20th1933 – Stationmaster’s Death

Loss to GWR and parish of Goytrey – The Late Mr Edward Spencer

By the passing on Friday of Mr Edward Spencer, stationmaster at Nantyderry, the Great Western Railway Co., has lost a splendid servant and the district generally a respected and highly esteemed resident.

Mr Spencer started his railway career at Pontypool Road Station under Inspector Seabourne and was afterwards transferred to Crumlin for a period.  He was thence promoted to Little Mill where he was stationmaster for 15 years. For the past 20 years he has had charge of Nantyderry Station.

He soon endeared himself to the parishioners and was a regular attendant and sides-man at Goytrey Parish Church.  He was an ardent gardener and was noted locally for his skill with a rod and line. He passed away at St George’s Hospital London at the age of 59.

The funeral on Wednesday was largely attended by his railway colleagues and a host of friends. The cortege assembled at the Station House and after a short service proceeded to Goytrey Church.  Here an impressive service was conducted by the Rev. H C P Belcher M.A., until recently the Rector of Goytrey, assisted by the Rev. Thomas John Richards the present Rector.  The concluding hymn “O God my Father while I Stray” was feelingly sung. Mr G W Merrick was at the organ and rendered “The Dead March” in “Saul” as the cortege left the Church.

Stinchcombe, Mr – 1870

Stinchcombe – 3rd September 1870

Mr Stinchcombe a farmer, of Monkswood, after returning from Pontypool market on Saturday last, was told that some cattle were trespassing in a field belonging to him, near Usk. He drove over to see. On his way home again his trap came into collision with a cart near Rhadyr Mill and he was thrown out and three of his ribs were broken. Of one of the shafts of his trap was snapped off and the horse galloped away, dragging the vehicle and was stopped near the Hendre Farm. Mr Stinchcombe’s little boy, who was riding with him, retained his seat and was uninjured.

25th September 1870

We have recorded that on Saturday 28th August, Mr Stinchcombe, farmer, of Monkswood, was thrown from his trap near Rhadyr Mill, had had three of his ribs broken. On Sunday last he thought himself much better and rose and eat a hearty dinner. Some time later he fell back into his wife’s arms and expired.

Late Mr W. Stinchcombe – Octogenarian Lay Preacher of Goytrey

The funeral took place at Saron Baptist Church Goytrey, on Thursday last of Mr William Stinchcombe who died at his home, Star Cottage on Monday 4th March aged 86. The Rev. C A Rees officiated assisted by the Rev’s J J Thomas [Llanover], D Lewis, Hanover, and E Symonds, Goytrey.

Mr Stinchcombe was a convinced and most loyal Baptist and was well known as a lay preacher, who in a quiet and unostentatious manner, rendered valuable service to the Churches.

Stinchcombe, Mrs M. – 1962

Mrs M. Stinchcombe, May 4th 1962 – Goytre.

The funeral of Mrs Mabel Stinchcombe, 73, caretaker of Chapel Ed, Goytre took place at Panteg Cemetery.

Services at Chapel Ed and the graveside were conducted by the Rev D W Jones, assisted by the Rev David Davies.

T255 – In Memory of Col Henry Bird b. 1780

In Memory of Col. Henry Bird
Born at Detroit U.S. April 24th 1780.

Colonel Bird entered the army in the 29th Regt., was Lieut. In the 94th also in the 5th Regt. Served at Major in the expedition to Hanover in 1805 and at the storming of Buenos Aires in 1886 and in the battles of Roleia and Vimiera in 1807.

In 1809 he served under Sir John Moore in Spain and afterwards in the expedition to Walcheremz. At the siege of Flushing he was made prisoner whilst charging a French Column and upon being restored to liberty at the surrender of that fortress he served in the Peninsular under Lord Wellington and distinguished himself at the battles of Salamanca and Vittoria.

At the close of the Peninsular war in 1815 he returned home to Goytre House in this parish.

In 1822 he was appointed to the 16th Regt. In Ceylon and was deputy Commissary General of that Island.

On the 2nd April 1829 he was seized with Cholera and died the following day leaving a widow and four children and lamented by a wide circle of friends.
