In the name of God Amen I John James Edward of the pishe of Goytrey wthin ye Countie of Monmoth and Doices of Landaffe being feeble and weake in body, but of good & pfect memorie laud and praise bee rendered unto Allmightie God doe make and ordayne this my last will and testament in maner & forme followeing, first I comend my soule into the hands of Allmightie God my maker and redeemer, and my body to buried in a Christian buriall in the church of Goytrey. Imprimis I give and bequeath towards the Cathedrall Church of Landaffe vid. Itm I give and bequeath towards my forgotten tythes to the pson of Goytrey xiid. Itm I give and bequeath to Maud my wedded wife all my goods cattell and chattells, implements & household stuffe, to her owne p’per use and as a suretie for her of the which moneys my will is that Richard William Phillipp and William his sonne bee equall partners with Maud my wife if they can lawfully bee …onered? by lawe. By will of this date John Gwynne Herbert Owen, then of Goytre Cottage in the County of Monmouth, Attorney at Law gave, devised and bequeathed:

All his personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever situate in manner thereinafter mentioned that was to say:

He gave, devised and bequeathed unto his little boy Johnney, then residing with him at Goytre and who is therein described as the son of Mrs Ann Kingston, certain hereditaments therin described as being in the several Counties of Monmouth and Brecon. To hold to him and his heirs forever.

The said testator also gave and bequeathed to the several parties therein certain pecuniary legacies. The said testator by his said will requested, devised and willed:

The Cottage at Goytre – should be kept in possession as a house for the children until little David attains the age of twenty one years. Mrs Anne Kingston to be allowed to remain with them and take charge of them so long as she chooses to act properly and kindly towards them.

And as to all the rest and residue and remainder of his (the said testator) real and personal estate:

Unto amongst and between little Johnny, David Robert, Sarah Anne Kingston and Clara Thackwell the first two being the children of Mrs Kingston, then residing with him (the said) testator and the latter the daughter of the late James Seabright Thackwell and Hannah his wife, their heirs and assigns for ever as tenants in common and not as joint tenants and to and for no other use intent or purpose whatsoever excepting that he gave to his old clerk Mr Harrison the sum of £50 in consideration of his long service with him and requested that he might be employed in getting in all debts due to him and that he might be allowed seven and a half percent on all debts gotton in by him over and above payment for his services during the time he was occupied.

The said testator also desired that Ann Kingston should be allowed to receive the interest of his (testators) property for the purpose of maintaining the children so long as she should live with them.

And with regard to the appointment of executors under that his will the children therin before named who should name who they please and the person appointed by them should have full power to carry out the trusts of his said Will. And they should also have the power to rescind such appointment after being made of such trustees and executor should not carry out the trusts of that his Will as aforesaid to their satisfaction and to appoint them on trust for his testators right heirs forever.

Testator also requested that the money arising from the policies on his life might be invested on real securities in the names of all the children last named and that the interest be appreciated to their maintenance. And that if Mrs Kingston should leave the children the testator gave unto her £10 a year free from the control of her husband.

Executed by the testator in the presence of two witnesses.

The said John Herbert Gwynn Owen died on the 14^th April 1863, unmarried and intestate as to trust estates and William Herbert Owen (his eldest surviving brother) of Narberth in the County of Pembroke is his heir at law.

July 16^th: Administrations with the before abstracted will annexed of the personal estate and effects of the said testator John Gwynn Herbert Owen described formerly of Goytre Cottage in the County of Monmouth but late of the town of Cardiff in the County of Glamorgan who died on the 14^th April 1863 at Pontypool in the said County of Monmouth was granted to Andrew Hair the curator or guardian duly elected by Sarah Ann Kingston Owen, spinster in the will described as Sarah Ann Kingston, John Gwynn Herbert Owen in the said will, described as little Johnney, and David Gwynn Owen in the said will described as David Robert respectively minors, the children of Mrs Ann Kingston three of the residuary legatees named in the said will for their use and benefit and until one of them should attain the age of twenty one years he having been first sworn.

Clara Marchmand (wife of Arnold Marchmand, formerly Thackwell) spinster daughter of the late James Seabright Thackwell and Hannah his wife, the other legatee named in the will having disclaimed and renounced all her right and title to appoint an executor of said will and also renounced the letter of administration (with said will annexed) of the personal estate and effects of said deceased. The said minors being incapable of exercising the power of appointing executors reserved to them by said will the said Ann Kingston having first consented and her Majesty’s Proctor having declined to interfere on the part of the.

And the said testator thereby empowered his said trustees by sale or mortgage or other disposition of any portion of the same estates to raise so much money and or invest the same at interest in Government or real securities and apply the proceeds thereof towards the maintenance, education and advancement in the world not his said children during their respective minorities as to his said trustees should seem fit and most expedient.

And the said testator directed his said trustees in case of his said two sons or either of them their or either heirs, executors, administrators or assigns becoming entitled to his said estates by virtue of the trusts aforesaid to retain out of the same estates the sum of seven shillings weekly and pay the same to his said wife so long as she should continue his widow in case she should wish to live apart from his said sons or either of them but of only one should act testator gave said £5 to said one.

And the said testator appointed the said Thomas Leadbeater and Thomas Rogers executors of his said Will.

Item I doe gieve graunt and devise unto Caterine my wief all that messuadge or tenem’t and water griest mill one killhowse one garden and one courtiledge to the said messuadge and water griest mill belonginge or appteyninge wth all waters water courses pondes weares scrankes? sluces and floudgates to the said water griest mill belonginge and also those three closes or pcells of arrable land and pasture comonlie called by the sev’all names of Cae y dyn?, Caher ton yllem?; and Gwerne y pownd wth thappnetnces to the said messuadge or tenem’t akewise belonginge or appteyninge or wth the same usuallie … situate beinge and lieinge together in the pishe of Coitre in the Countie of Monmoth aforesaid betweene the way leadinge from Kemys bridge towards Bergevenny the lands of Morgan ap Jevan and the lands of William Carpenter and Johan his wiefe called Ca kyd and Ca therwen one all ptes and sides thereof the reversion of all wch said messuadge or tenem’t water griest mill lands and other the premisses herein before devised wth thapptenances … when hit shall happen ymediatlie after the deceasse of the said Johan Carpenter belonginge and appleyainge to me and to my heires expectant by force and vertue of the last will and Testament of Harry Cadogan deceassed (reputed father of me the said John) to have and to holde the said messuadge or tenem’t water griest mill kill howse garden courtiledge waters water courses lands and other the premisses before devised (and the reversion thereof when hit shall happen ymediatlie after the decesse of the said Johan Carpenter) by the said Caterine her heires and assignes forever. And my further will and mynd is that the said messuadge or tenem’t water griest mill lands and other the p’misses before devised shalbe sould by the said Caterine towards the p’forminge of this my last will and Testamt. Item I doe gieve and bequeath to Morgan Thomas and Jaen vergh Thomas all my howsehold stuffe and ymplem’ts of howse after the decesse of my said wief. Item I doe gieve and bequeath to the said Caterine my wief all my corne uppon the grownd and in my howse together wth all and singular my goods cattle and chattels moveable and unmoveable herein unbequeathed. Item I do gieve and bequeath unto James sonne of Elizabeth my reputed sonne the some of twentie powndes of current Englishe money to be paid by the said Caterine my wiefe (of the sale of the said messuadge water griest mill lands and other the p’misses before devised) in maner and forme followinge (That is to saie) ten powndes of current Englishe money apeece of the said twentie powndes) wthin twelve monthes next after the deasse of the said Johan Carpenter and ten pownds of like current money ( residue of the said twentie powndes wthin two yeres next after the decesse of the said Johan. Item I doe nominate ordaine and appointe the said Caterine my wief to be sole executrix of this my last will and testam’t. And do nominate and appointe Morgan Phillipp Morgan of Mamhilad and Richard Morgan of Coitre to be overseers thereof. First I doe comend my soule to Allmighty God my maker and reddemer and my boddy to be burried in Christian buriall in the parish church of Goytre and alsoe I doe give and bequeath towards the Cathedrall Church of Landaph six pence. Ite I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Florence two oxen during her life time and after her desese unto Elizabeth Harry my well belloved daughter. Item I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Harry my daughter two black cowes with a white forhed. Item I give and bequeath all my corne growing uppon the ground where I doe live now unto ….? daughter Elizabeth Harry and uppon condition that the said Elizabeth shall lend unto her brother William Harry the sume of six bushell of wheat and muncorne and likewise the sume of eight bussell of oats and the sume of four bushell of barlley the first or second year after to be …?   Ite I give and bequeath all my househould stufe unto my well belloved wife Flourence Powell during her naturall life and after her desese unto my daughter Elizabeth Harry and to her assignes. Ite I give and bequeath unto my well beloved sone all the beeds? that is with in the house and with out unto William my said sone and all the furnitures that doth belonge to the oxen and I doe nominate and appoynt my well beloved daghter Elizabeth Harry to be sole executrix of this my last will and Testament. I John Harry Watkine of the pish of Goytrey in the Countie of Monmouth and diocs of Landaph yeoman callinge to rememberance the uncertentie of mans life not knowinge when those our mortal bodies shalbe disolved and …dinge by God grace to the intent that my mind maie be unburdened wth the care thereof when soever it shall please God to cale for me or ells to visite me wth more extreamitie of sickness beinge now sicke in bodie but of pfect memorie laud and praise be given to Almightie God doe make and ordaine this my last will and Testament in maner and forme folowinge: (that is to saie)

Item I doe give and bequeath to my mother the use of all my household stuffe dureinge her naturall life exceptinge the use of one bed wch I doe give to my brother Valentine during such tyme as he shall remaine sole and unmarried.

Item I doe give and bequeath unto Margaret the daughter of John Andrew fortie shillings to be payed unto her wthin five yeares next after my decease.

Item I doe give and bequeath to William and John the sonns of John Andrew fortie shillings to be payed unto them and to be equally divided betweene them wthin five yeares next after my decease. And if it happen that either of them shall decease before ye shall attaine the age of one and twentie yeares then my mind is that his or her legazie shall be divided betweene them that shall survive and attaine to that age provided that theire father shall secure my executors hereafter named that the said children shall seale a sufficient dischardge unto him confirming the said legazies when they shall accomplish the age of one and twentie yeares.

Item I doe give and bequeath amongst the five children of my brother Thomas Watkine that are now livinge five pownds of current English money to be payed unto them and to be equally divided betweene them wthin six yeares next after my decease. And if any of them happen to die before they accomplish the age of one and twentie yeares then my mynd is the said legazie shallbe divided amongst them that shall survive and come to that age provided allwaies that their father shall secure my executors (page creased) that the said children shall seale a sufficient dischardge concerninge the said legazie when they shall accomplish the age of one and twentie yeares.

Item I doe give and bequeath to my brother Valentine one coffer and one cowboord wch remaineth in the end of my house.

Item I doe appoint and ordaine that my brother Walter shall keepe and maintaine my mother during her life in health and in sickness wth sufficient meat, drinke, clothes and all other necessaries. And if it happen that my brother shall decease before her then my mind is that he shall secure fortie shillings a yeare to be payed unto her duringe her life towards her maintenaunce.

Item I doe appoynt that my brother Valentine shall have the use of a chamber in my house wth free ingress and regress there for his bedinge soe longe as he shall remaine sole and unmarried.

Item I doe give and bequeath all my goods, cattle, household stuff, corne and moveables whatsoever unbequeathed alreadie to my brother Walter Harry whom I doe nominate, ordain and appoynt sole executor of this my last will and testament and doe revoke all other willes by me made.

In the name of God Amen. I, John Jenkins of the parish of Goytrey in the County of Monmouth, farmer, being sick in body but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, praised be to God for the same, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following:

I give, devise and bequeath unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Jenkins all my money, securities for money, goods, chattles and effects of what nature or kindsoever and wheresoever the same may be at the time of my death, for and during the term of her widowhood.

And I do nominate, constitute and appoint my said wife executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all and every other will or wills by me at any time heretofore made and do declare this only to be my last will and testament.

In the name of God Amen: I John Jones of the parish of Goytrey in the county of Monmouth, labourer, being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, praised be God for the same, do make this my last will and testament in the following manner and form, namely:

I give and devise to my beloved wife Elizabeth Jones her heirs and assigns all that my messuage or tenement, situate, lying and being in the parish of Trevethin in the county of Monmouth to hold to her the said Elizabeth Jones, her heirs and assigns forever.

I give and bequeath to my son the sum of four pounds, to be paid to him by my daughters, at the expiration of one year after the death of my wife.

And as to all the rest and residue of all my personal estate, goods, chattels and effects of what nature or kind soever or wherever the same may be at the time of my death, I give and bequeath to my said loving wife Elizabeth Jones whom I hereby appoint sole executrix of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former will or wills by me at any time heretofore made, ratifying and confirming this only to be my last will and testament.

Item: I give and bequeathe to David Lewes my sonne the lease of the Rectorye tythes lands oblacons fruites rightes proffitts and commodityes of Lanover Mamhilad and Trevethin within the deoces of Landaffe the xvth daye of Maye in the sixt yeare of the Queenes Maiestie that nowe is whiche shall commence after the xpiracon of one olde lease graunted to Thomas Jones gent deceased for the terme of fowre score yeares then to come together with the righte title interest and terme of yeares whiche I the saide testator have in and into the saide lease and the comodityes therein conteyned and specified whiche lease was graunted by the Deane Archdeacon and Chapter of Landaffe.

Item: I doe give devise and bequeathe to Richard Lewes my sonne all my landes and tentes whatsoever whiche I the saide testator have purchased of David Williams of Lanteiloe Bertholewe scituate lying and being within the saide parrishe of Lanteiloe by meares and markes of olde tyme use to have and to holde the same landes and tenements with all and singular thappurtenances to the saide Richard Lewes to the use and behoofe of the saide Richard Lewes and the heires of his bodye lawfully begotten for ever.

And for wante of suche yssue to the use and behoofe of David Lewes my sonne and the lawfull heires of his body for ever.

And for wante of suche yssue to the use and behoofe of Marye and Katherine my daughter’s theires of theire twoe bodyes lawfully begotten for ever.

And for wante of such yssue to the use of the right and next heires of me the saide testator.

Item: I give and bequeathe to my saide sonne Richard Lewes all my lease lands whiche I lately purchased of Lewes John ap Jenkin of Lantiloe Bartholewe aforesaide and nowe in the tenure of Thomas John Rice.

Item: I give devise and bequeathe to the saide Richard Lewes my sonne all the fefte? parte of the freeholde and inheritaunce of the saide lease lands whiche I also purchased of the saide Lewes John ap Jenkin to have and to holde the same fefte parte of the saide lease lands with all and singular the appurtenances to the saide Richard Lewes to the use and behoofe of the saide Richard Lewes and the heires of his bodye lawfully begotten for ever. And for want of suche yssue to the use and behoofe of David Lewes my sonne and the lawfull heires of his bodye for ever. And for wante of suche yssue to the use and behoofe of Marye and Katherine my daughter and to the heires of theire twoe daughter’s bodyes lawfully begotten for ever. And for want of suche yssue to the righte use of the righte and next heires of me the saide testator. Item I give and bequeathe to the saide Richard Lewes my sonne one lease with the residue of the yeares and terme yet to come of and in one howse and other messuages with thappurtenances nowe in the tenure and occupacon of David ap Rees Coger scituate lying and being within the Towne of Bergavenny in the County of Monmothe and was late had and boughte of Richard John Llauelen late deceased.

Item: I give and bequeathe to my saide sonne Richard Lewes my lease and the residue of the yeares in the same yet unexpired of and in one meadowe scituate and lying in Llanwenarthe in the County of Monmothe nowe in the tenure of Phillipp Jenkin ap Evan whiche I had and boughte of the widowe of Phillipp Thomas ap John of Llanwenarthe aforesaide.

Item I give and bequeathe to the saide Richard Lewes my sonne the lease of the Rectory of Lanteiloe Bartholwe within the deoces of Landaffe whiche is holden of the Deane Archdeacon and Chapter of Landaffe together with all the proffitts and comodityes in the same saide lease comprised and conteyned and the wholle terme of years in the same yet to come and nowe unexpired. Item I give and bequeathe to Marye and Katherine my twoe daughters foure hundreth and forty pounds of lawfull money of England to be equally devided betwene them bothe? whiche saide fower hundreth and forty pounds one Thomas Skidmore of Kent Churche in the County of Hereforde Esquire standeth bounde as well by awarde and arbitrament as also by bonde to paye at dayes place and times expressed in the saide awarde as by the same it is to be seene more manifestly.

Item: I give and bequeathe to Marye Harbert the daughter of John Herbert Esquire one of the Maisters of her Maiesties requests the some of tenne pounds. The residue of all my goods and chattells as well reall as personall not herein before given willed or bequeathed I doe give and bequeathe to Elizabeth Lewes my wyfe whome I doe constitute and ordayne by this my present Testament my sole executrix to accomplyshe and performe the same accordingly. In wittnesse whereof I have hereunto sett my hande and seale the daye moneth and yeare first above written. And this my last will conteynes three sheetes of paper in all.
